Parents experience many emotional roller coaster rides as they raise their children, but one of the most stressful times is when they have to deal with a sick child. It is a helpless feeling in many ways because you often know there’s not much you can do for them to ease their pain. If your child has suddenly become ill and you can’t diagnose it, then get to a doctor right away. Obviously if it is a life threatening situation, then call 911 with no hesitation.
It is best to take a few seconds and breathe and think about the situation when something sudden happens. Our initial reactions often cause us to rush to action, but unless there is profuse bleeding or CPR is needed, then you need to move swiftly, but with a clear head. Watch their behavior, their eating and sleeping and breathing. These will give you more information with regard to whether you need to seek medical advice.
Be sure to trust your instincts. Very rarely is a parental instinct wrong. If you feel that there is something really wrong with your child, then by all means get them checked out by a medical doctor asap.
Head injuries can sometimes be alarming because the head tends to bleed a lot. So a head injury may bleed heavily for a few minutes, but more than likely it will stop soon and things will be fine. If the child is vomiting, then it is important to keep them hydrated. Drinking liquids through a straw will encourage sipping. It is best for upset stomachs if the liquid is at room temperature. Ginger ale is effective, as ginger is known for its calming effects on the stomach. Sick children will need to rest, so it is best to let them rest instead of trying to cure them with over the counter medications at the onset.
Whenever your child gets sick, just keep your head clear and think about the situation. If you keep these things in mind, then you’ll be able to help the situation along more effectively while avoiding any unnecessary panic that can accompany having a sick or injured child.
